Remember to keep working on colors, shapes, letters, letter sounds, beginning and ending sounds, positional concepts, numbers, counting, addition, 1:1 correspondence and comparing sets. Videos shared last week on the blog can be a great way to practice! Here are a few new ideas too:
- Practice positional concepts- Make this a fun activity by using their body and a favorite toy! Ask your child to put the toy “on” their head, “behind” their backs, or “in front of” you. Another way to practice is with a small object and a cup or a bowl. Positional concepts- on, off, in, out, behind, in front, over, under, next to, beside, between, top, middle, bottom, first, last.
- Practice counting- Ask your child to count to 5, 10, 15 or ask them to count as high as they can (write the numbers on a number line to help them). Count objects around the house- How many windows do you have in your house? How many bowls in the cabinet? Ask them to show you 5 of their favorite toys. Give them a number (a visual of the number can help) and ask them to count/show you that amount. Example: Show me 7 blocks.
- Practice letters- Make it fun by putting letters on post-it notes and hiding them around your house. Have your child find the post-it notes and identify the letter (you can also them to give you the sound the letter makes or a word that begins with that letter). Write letters on small pieces of paper and play Memory. Make 2 sets of letters (both uppercase or one set uppercase and one set lowercase) and put out 8 cards at a time to play Memory and match the letters (if 8 cards is too easy you can add more).
- Practice comparing sets- Use goldfish, dry cereal, other snacks, or small toys. Make 2 different piles and ask you child which pile has more or is greater? Which one has less? Make 3 piles and ask which 2 piles are the same. If that is easy for them, write the numbers down and ask the same questions without the visual of the snacks. Example: 7 2 (Which one is greater?)
