· Practice retelling/reading comprehension- pick one of your child’s favorite stories and have them retell the story. Ask questions about the story as you are reading or after you have read the story. Make reading an extra fun activity by reading somewhere different- bring a blanket out to the grass with a snack and read together. Ask your child about the pictures, characters, where the story takes place and what the story was about.
· Number practice with exercise- make a list of 5 exercises your child can do (examples: run across the driveway, catch a ball, kick a soccer ball, jumping jacks, toe touches). Make number flash cards and turn all the cards upside down. Have them pick a card, tell you the number and do that amount of one of the exercises. Example: I picked the #5 card and now I have to do 5 jumping jacks.
· Counting- count how many steps from your front door to your bedroom or how many steps from the kitchen to the bathroom. Have your child decide where they want to start and end to count the steps.
· Writing- practice writing letters, numbers, your name or drawing shapes with chalk on the driveway. Use paintbrushes and a bucket of water to practice writing with water on the driveway. See how quickly the sun can make it disappear.
